THE IMPORTANCE OF BIBLE CHRONOLOGY
Chronology is one of the
most interesting and awe-inspiring ways of
studying the Bible. The Bible is like no other
book and at vastly higher level than any other
holy book or philosophical work. It is the only
book that has accurate prophetic predictions of
word events. In many cases the dates of specific
events are given hundreds and even thousands of
years before they happen.
This confirms the guiding
hand of God, in and through and in spite of, all
the chaotic events of History. It also confirms
the inspiration and reliability of the word of
God. It confirms that God is executing His plan
and purpose in History, that history has a
meaning and destiny and therefore our lives have
meaning and purpose in His plan. It
confirms Gods faithfulness to His covenants
and His promises to this day.
Of special interest to us
are the three separations of Israel from its land
and the prediction of the date of Jesus
crucifixion. By studying the chronology table
above you can see that these prophecies were
fulfilled precisely on the year foretold by the
prophets.
·
The 430-year period from the covenant of Israel
and the Exodus prophesied by Abraham in
Genesis 12
·
The 40 year period between Isaac being declared
heir and the Exodus (Genesis 15;13)
·
The seventy-year exile prophesied by Jeremiah.
(Jeremiah 29:10)
·
The date of the Messiahs (first) coming and
the completing of His ministry within 490 years
of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem.
(Daniel Chapter 9)
·
And the prediction that Jerusalem would come back
under Jewish control 2300 years after the
conquest of the Middle East by a Greek King.
(This prophecy given by Daniel in
Daniel Chapter 8 foretold the conquest of the
Middle East by Alexander the Great 2000 years
before Alexanders birth. It also foretells
that 2300 years after Alexanders conquest
Jerusalem would return to Jewish control. This
prophecy was endorsed by Jesus (Luke 21:24) and
fulfilled precisely in 1967. It confirms
that the present day restoration of Israel and
Jerusalem to Jewish control is no accident of
history but is the pre-ordained fulfillment of
the plan of God.
